Tjokorda
Raka
Sukawati
is an Indonesian engineer from Bali who managed to become the inventor of the
Barrier-free Playground System (LPBH), better known as the Sosrobahu
technique. The Sosrobahu technique is a construction technique that is used primarily to roll the shoulders of a
flyover concrete arm. Thanks to the discovery of Tjokorda,
the construction of a flyover from Cawang to Tanjung Priok in the 1980s was successfully carried
out without disrupting traffic flow.
After
completing civil engineering education at the Bandung Institute of Technology, Tjokorda
began his career at PT. Hutama Karya, a construction and infrastructure
company, which is a State-Owned Enterprise under the Department of Public Works
PT. Hutama Karya. In 1987, the company received an order
to build the Cawang-Tanjung Priok flyover. The construction encountered
obstacles in the use of the construction techniques. If conventional techniques
are forcibly applied in the construction, traffic congestion will increase. In
fact, the construction of the flyover must not interfere with the flow of
traffic underneath it.
Another alternative that was raised at the time was the application of hanging
methods like those used in Singapore. However, the method fails to be used
because of the high costs required. Finally, Tjokorda succeeded in solving the problem with
his Sosrobah technique.
Tjokorda got the idea of the technique when he was about to
repair his 1974 Mercedes. When he lifted the front wheel of his car with a
hydraulic pump, the body of the car spun with the stem axis of the jack because
the garage was rather tilted and the floor was slippery due to oil spills. The
incident inspired him to apply the workings of a hydraulic pump to lift heavy
objects which, if based on a slippery surface, could be shifted easily. After
doing a number of experiments, Tjokorda finally succeeded in making a cylindrical rotary tool
which would later be used to rotate the shoulder of the concrete flyover arm.
Actually the discovery has not been specifically tested in the laboratory.
However, Tjokorda believes his discovery will succeed and even willing
to resign from his position as director of PT. Hutama Karya if the
findings cannot work. It turned out that the findings did work well.
The naming
technique of Tjokorda's findings as a Sosrobahu technique was given by President Soeharto at the time. This Sosrobahu technique has also been applied to the construction
of highways in the Philippines, Malaysia, Thailand and Singapore. Tjokorda has also developed the second version of the Sosrobahu technique so that the technique can be applied more
economically and efficiently.
